Run a Currency Revaluation
Last updated: 2026-07-09 Summary:
- Revaluation restates your foreign-currency balances at the exchange rate on a date you choose, and books the difference as an unrealized FX gain or loss.
- You always preview the exact journal entry first — nothing posts until you confirm.
- If you post one in error, you can reverse it. Revaluation is a multi-currency feature; see Multi-currency for the model behind it.
Before you start, make sure the accounting period you’re revaluing is open and that exchange rates for the as-of date are set (Multi-Currency → Exchange Rates).
Preview and post
Section titled “Preview and post”- Go to Multi-Currency → Revaluation (
/currency/revaluation). This page lists revaluations you’ve already posted. Click Run Revaluation. - Pick the As-of Date — the date whose exchange rates will be used to restate balances. It defaults to the end of the current month. (If a revaluation already ran for that month, eKapital warns you.) Click Generate Preview.
- Review the preview. It shows the net unrealized gain / loss and a table with each foreign-currency account: its Foreign Balance, current Book Value, the Current Rate, the Revalued Amount, and the resulting Gain / Loss.
- Expand Proposed journal entry to see exactly what will post: one entry dated the as-of date, one line per foreign-currency account, with the net closing to an Unrealized FX Gain or Unrealized FX Loss account. Nothing is on the ledger yet — this is a dry run. Use Change date to go back.
- Click Post Revaluation and confirm. The journal entry posts and you’re returned to the history list with the new revaluation highlighted.
Reverse a revaluation
Section titled “Reverse a revaluation”On the revaluation history table, use the Reverse action on the row you want to undo. eKapital posts a reversing journal entry into the current open period, backing out the revaluation’s effect.
Where people get tripped up
Section titled “Where people get tripped up”- “Cannot run revaluation.” Revaluation needs an open accounting period. If the period is closed (or there’s no open period), you’ll see this alert — reopen or move to an open period first. See Close an accounting period.
- Nothing to revalue. Revaluation only touches balances held in a foreign currency. If all your balances are in your home currency, the preview will be empty.
- Rates not set. The revalued amounts use the exchange rate for the as-of date. If that rate is missing, set it under Exchange Rates before generating the preview.
- “Unrealized,” on purpose. This gain or loss reflects rates at a point in time and doesn’t touch cash. It’s the standard period-end restatement, not a realized gain from settling a foreign balance.
